Zeugma Intros Smart Series Applications
By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributing Editor
Supplier of telecommunications solutions, Zeugma Systems, has announced the Zeugma (News - Alert) Smart Series applications that run within Zeugma open application sandbox (OAS).
The first application in this Smart Series, SmartVideo (News - Alert), allows service providers to turn streaming internet video into an opt-in video experience. This is done by identifying and allocating the appropriate amount of bandwidth to video traffic, including high-definition (HD) video.
This offers a viewing experience almost similar to the locally attached DVD player, according to company officials.
Using Zeugma SmartVideo, wireline service providers can develop applications for for video streams from video-content providers such as Netflix, YouTube or Apple (News - Alert) iTunes.
Also, providers can create, test, and implement video services. SmartVideo enables providers to “develop video services, test them, refine them, and, if they fail to achieve market traction, discard them, all in internet timeframes,” said Tom Meehan, vice president of product line management at Zeugma.
The key functionalities of Zeugma SmartVideo include session identification; policy determination; connection admission control (CAC); dynamic bandwidth application (DBA); quality of experience (QOE) monitoring; session settlement.
With the help of session inspection (DSI) technology, SmartVideo observes downstream subscriber traffic and identifies the initiation of streaming video sessions, and next the application checks the policy for each session,
By checking each session, it’s able to determine if the subscriber has purchased premium video services. The functionality of CAC enables it to determine if the appropriate network resources are available to provide the necessary bandwidth for the entire video session.
If it’s determined by CAC that there is enough bandwidth, officials said, SmartVideo reserves bandwidth for the duration of the subscriber’s session. The session settlement is useful for billing and auditing purposes. This allows the database to record what happened during the session, when it happened, and what the session’s QOE was.
The Zeugma OAS allows service providers to embed applications within the ZSN that are developed by Zeugma.
The Zeugma OAS, Zeugma Smart Series offers a range of applications opportunities. OAS runs on an extensible compute grid directly within the Zeugma Services Node (ZSN), a service delivery router (SDR).
Officials said that SDR combines “massive” compute resources with next-generation capacity, service awareness, and subscriber awareness.
With the Zeugma OAS, it can identify new service requirements, while through ZSN, they can roll them into their network and introduce new services. In September of this year, the company added Telchemy’s quality of experience (QOE) monitoring tools to the Zeugma OAS.
