ArcSoft (News - Alert), a software developer of multimedia technologies and applications across desktop and embedded platforms, announced that its high-definition (HD) Blu-ray disc player, TotalMedia Theatre, has received “DTS (News - Alert) Surround Sensation certification” from DTS (Digital Theater System).
DTS Surround Sensation is a type of surround sound format/technology. The processing contains psycho-acoustic information that alters human perception, thereby providing the 3D surround sound effect with only two speakers.
DTS Surround Sensation technology down-converts DTS 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 -channel soundtracks to stereo while processing a realistic simulation of surround sound for two-channel equipment such as headphones and 2.1-channel home theater systems. It also enhances the weakened stereo image and ambience of digitally compressed audio, while keeping the monaural components (such as solo vocals) unchanged, said officials.
ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre is a universal video player that includes both Blu-ray and HD-DVD options of video playing. The video player also supports the next generation audio formats used in Blu-ray discs and HD-DVDs such as - LPCM, AC-3, DD+, and MLP. It also supports Dolby stereo surround and virtual speaker mode.
Additional features of the TotalMedia Theatre include: built-in Windows Media Center edition plug-in; high-bandwidth digital content protection (HDCP) support; support for AACS (advanced access content system) protected discs; ArcSoft virtual speakers; and 10-band equalizer.
George Tang, vice president and general manager of video and home entertainment group of ArcSoft, said in a statement, "By implementing this technology in the software, ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre delivers the ultimate audio experience to users when watching high definition movies on PC.”
ArcSoft officials say that this certification is the first of its kind in the software industry. In January, the company announced support for DTS Surround Sensation and in May, its TotalMedia Theatre obtained DTS-HD Master Audio certification as well.
ArcSoft offers a full line of imaging and video solutions that enhance the features, performance, and user experience of mobile phones, digital cameras, optical drives, personal computers, and consumer electronics devices.
Agoura Hills, California-based DTS is a digital technology company. Its technology is used in home theatre, car audio, PC and game console products, as well as DVD-video, HD-DVD, Blu-ray disc and surround music software. It also provides DTS-licensing for consumer electronics products.
