Mediacom, NBC to Air Olympic Games on VOD, HDTV, Internet

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Mediacom Communications Corp. said today that it’s signed an agreement with NBC Universal (News - Alert), to provide its customers with “more viewing choices and enhanced content offerings” as part of NBCU’s coverage of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, which begin Friday.

This latest agreement will help Mediacom customers access thousands of hours of NBCU’s Olympic coverage delivered across multiple platforms. The multiple platforms include video on demand, high-definition television and high-speed Internet.

Mediacom officials said that Mediacom High-Definition customers will have access to more than 800 hours of Olympic HD coverage on NBC HD, Universal HD and USA HD.

For the VOD customers, Mediacom Digital Cable offers Pre-Games content featuring clips on the excitement of the Games, including 60 clips across several categories. These categories include Beijing 411, Meet the Athletes and Team USA Preview.

Also, officials said, the Digital Cable offers In-Games package containing the best events each day. Content will include overall daily highlights by sport – approximately 15 per day, some in HD – and “Rewind,” approximately five to 10 of the best sessions per day, company officials say.

And, Mediacom Online customers can use Internet connection to access NBCU’s 2,200 hours of coverage of 25 events streamed live as well as full-event video replays, extensive highlights, including daily recaps of key events.

In addition, customers can also access best-of montages, commentator analysis and athlete-specific clips each day, all available on NBCOlympics.com through a link from Mediacomtoday.com, officials say.

The offerings may vary by system, but Mediacom’s channel line-ups usually include all seven NBCU networks – NBC, USA Network, MSNBC, CNBC, Oxygen, Telemundo and Universal HD. Plus, high-definition reception is offered for NBC and USA Network as part of HDTV Family Cable.

Mediacom Communications says it offers a wide array of broadband products and services, including traditional video services, digital television, video-on-demand, digital video recorders, high-definition television, high-speed Internet access and phone service.

“The bar has been raised in a significant way this year, and we’re proud to use Mediacom’s advanced fiber-optic broadband network to give our customers unparalleled multi-platform access to the Summer Olympics,” said John Pascarelli, executive vice president of operations at Mediacom.
