Pearson Invests in Educational Game Designer Tabula Digita

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

As the online learning takes major steps, companies in this arena are taking important initiatives to explore new possibilities and markets. Accordingly, Pearson, a provider of education and education technology, has taken a minority stake in Tabula Digita as part of $4.7 million Tabula Digita financing led by Intel (News - Alert) Capital.

Tabula Digita is the creator of DimensionU Learning System, a universe of educational video games where students practice core K-12 subjects including math, literacy, science and history. The company offers technology-based educational tools for elementary, middle and high school students.

Pearson and Tabula Digita have offered 3rd to 8th grade classrooms a special line of Tabula Digita's award winning DimensionM math series for the past one year. The math series, developed by Tabula Digita, is aligned to Pearson's market-leading elementary and middle school programs Pearson and Tabula Digita have agreed to deepen their partnership and develop new educational games across key content areas in the new phase of the relationship.

"Our partnership with Tabula Digita has shown that students and teachers are enthusiastically engaged with DimensionM,' said Pearson's CEO for School Curriculum Peter Cohen. 'With 99 percent of boys and 94 percent of girls of all racial and ethnic groups and incomes playing games, we want to engage them on their digital turf now. We are right there meeting millions of kids in their digital world."

Bringing elementary and middle school students against their classmates and students from other schools, Tabula Digita has staged tournaments in New York City, Austin, Texas, and other locations where students compete to solve problems that are part of the video games, the company states.

Recently, the company joined hands with Penguin Group to launch We Give Books, a new digital initiative that enables anyone with access to the Internet to put books in the hands of children who don't have them, simply by reading online. The free Web site gives parents, caregivers, and educators immediate access to a growing digital collection of Penguin Group's classic children's literature.
