Cisco Announces Installation of TelePresence in More than 35 Higher Education Institutions

By Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Networking Specialist Cisco has reportedly  announced that more than 35 higher education institutions have purchased company’s TelePresence to bring teachers and professors with specialized expertise to students efficiently and economically.

The San Jose, Calif.-based company said universities and educational institutions around the world are adopting Cisco (News - Alert) TelePresence as a way to accelerate decision making, improve communications and create open innovation between academic and private industry researchers and develops innovative distance learning programs that benefit from in-person collaboration.

Cisco TelePresence offers live, face-to-face communication experience over the network that empowers users to collaborate easily and also helps people meet, share content, create high-quality video recordings and events, consult with experts and deliver powerful personalized services, all using the power of the network for an immersive in-person experience.

It even creates a virtual learning environment to help colleges and universities embrace environmental sustainability goals through the reduction of travel, while extending the reach of university experts and attracting new students.

“Education is fundamentally a collaborative, interactive endeavour, crucial to the success of future generations, communities and countries,” Charles Stucki, vice president and general manager, Cisco TelePresence Systems business unit said in a statement. “With new interactive collaboration tools, such as the virtual learning environments created by Cisco TelePresence systems, educational institutions are able to extend their academic expertise, share resources and equip students with 21st century job skills.”

Raymond Smith, associate dean of executive education at the Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina, said that the collaboration with Cisco allows  school officials to take executive learning to a whole new level.

“The use of Cisco TelePresence and other technologies will fundamentally change how we think about global learning and teaching in a way that is more visually stimulating and interactive than any vehicle ever used in educating executives, " Smith said in a statement.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, North Carolina State University, Purdue University (News - Alert), Stanford University are some of the universities on Cisco’s client list using TelePresence helping speed new developments and improve ongoing research collaboration to foster more open innovation.

The company is jointly working with U.S.-based national research network, National LambdaRail to create the advancement of Cisco TelePresence connections among higher education institutions.
