Northern Michigan University Selects Motorola Network for WiMAX Service

By Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Northern Michigan University (NMU) has reportedly selected Motorola’s wireless broadband infrastructure for a new mobile WiMAX network in the school.

NMU is currently deploying a fully functional Motorola (News - Alert) WiMAX network in its campus that would enable nearly 3,000 of the school's more than 9,000 students to experience WiMAX on the go including the use of video chat sessions using their new WiMAX (News - Alert)-enabled laptops provided by the university.

NMU said it is also providing a live demonstration to students for using WiMAX in multiple off-campus sites.

Dave Maki, NMU chief technology officer said they selected Motorola for this project because of its leadership position in deploying WiMAX networks worldwide. He also said that the University had an aggressive timeline and were confident they could meet their needs.

“Through our Educational Broadband Service license we'll also provide high-speed wireless broadband access to local school and municipal offices - extending the benefits of WiMAX broadband to our entire community," Maki said.

The Univesity is also planning to provide Motorola WiMAX devices, including the USBw 100 USB adaptor (dongle) and desktop CPEi 150 and CPEo 450 to students and others with older laptops to enable them to connect to the WiMAX network.

Dave Wangrow, senior director, WiMAX product management, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility said, "With this mobile WiMAX network, NMU and Motorola are pushing technology forward to bring the many benefits of WiMAX broadband access to students and faculty and to foster economic growth in the region."
