Xirrus 802.11n Deployed by School District to Provide Students with Wireless Learning

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

The Moorpark Unified School District in California’s Moorpark recently announced its decision to deploy Xirrus 802.11n Wi-Fi Arrays wireless mobility with a focus on encouraging student learning and progress by improving mobility and interoperability. Moorpark’s technology team chose to go with Xirrus because it promises to deliver better bandwidth, exposure, and user density versus traditional access point systems and even Ethernet switch based workgroups, thereby cutting down on costs and efficiently replacing outdated wired computer connections with wireless mobile devices.

The Moorpark Unified School District has over 7200 students and 500 staff members on its rolls and has under its anvil eleven schools which include six elementary, two middle schools, one comprehensive high school, a continuation high school and a middle college program. The schools have won numerous awards including the California Distinguished School, National Blue Ribbon, Title 1 Academic Achievement and Community High Has Model Continuation High School status.
With the deployment of Xirrus, Moorpark hopes to provide students with a harmonious and technologically superior learning environment that is ensconced in a vigorous and secure infrastructure while providing the tutors with the tools to cope with the challenges that are present in a society fret with changing technology everyday. Teachers can now work together from remote locations, regardless of their home base. Together with deploying Xirrus, the district also plans to provide students and teachers with laptops and thus, carrying forward their learning mantra that learning can happen anywhere and not just classrooms.
Xirrus is the industry pioneer in wireless mobility by offering a viable alternative to traditional Wi-Fi offerings and switched Ethernet to the desktop. Their Wi-Fi array assimilates 4, 8, 12, 16 or 24 802.11abg+n radios with a high output directional antenna system into a single device and an embedded multi gigabit switch and spectrum analyzer, Wi-Fi controller, firewall and dedicated Wi-Fi threat sensor. They claim to provide the maximum bandwidth, coverage and user density than their industry counterparts thereby enabling their users to cut down cabling, power and other network costs and installation time.
The Xirrus Arrays work from the edge of the network to encrypt data ensuring the security of user data and achieving better efficiencies in IT real estate by decluttering outdated Wi-Fi controllers. The network is also reputed to be very reliable and low maintenance.
According to Charles Betinelli, Regional Manager at Xirrus, “Schools can save time and money associated with wired connectivity by deploying our Arrays – one 802.11n Array can deliver a few Gigabits of Wi-Fi bandwidth and support a few hundred users off one cable drop. There is no need to deploy an access point every 20 feet like some vendors profess, which costs a lot of money and time while not solving the issue at hand—that Wi-Fi can and ought to be the primary connection for network users.”
