Aruba Solutions Upgrade Carnegie Mellon University Campus Wi-Fi Network

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributor

Carnegie Mellon University has reportedly upgraded its core campus Wi-Fi network with Aruba Networks’ (News - Alert) 802.11n wireless LANs.

Aruba Networks deals in wireless LANs and secure mobility solutions.

Through a project called the ‘Wireless Andrew’ program, Aruba Networks had helped Carnegie Mellon University to equip its 144 acre campus with a wireless computing network. And now Aruba will help unveil a new and improved upgrade termed ‘Wireless Andrew 2.0’, sporting the power and speed that users experience with most wired connections. The upgrade will elevate wireless computing speeds from the current rate of 11megabits per second in most areas to about 100 megabits per second, enabling users to access the Internet, check their email and download files almost 10 times faster than they presently do.

For the upgrade the university has installed 1,540 Aruba 802.11n access points and dual Aruba 6000 Mobility Controllers for the purpose delivering Wi-Fi service to academic and administrative buildings including lecture halls, laboratories, faculty and staff offices, the campus library, and the University Center.

Dan McCarriar, Carnegie Mellon's director of network and production services has stated that the new Aruba 802.11n network covers the core of the university’s campus. The network automatically adapts to local operating environments, and they have received very positive feedback from users about network performance.

The new 802.11n wireless technology will provide more power, more speed and greater coverage, all with less hardware and equipment used will also be more efficient. Aruba officials add its Adaptive Radio Management (ARM (News - Alert)) technology lowers deployment and maintenance costs by automating site surveys and using infrastructure-based controls to optimize the performance of Wi-Fi clients in real-time.

ARM can also ensure seamless operation by helping the data, video and voice apps get sufficient network resources by overseeing the interaction of Wi-Fi clients.

Aruba has installed the policy-enforcement firewall (PEF) software on the mobility controllers to safeguard the integrity of the university. The Aruba PEF monitors per user traffic and enforces usage policies on a continuous basis. This is especially compelling for implementing per-user quarantine roles. The firewall classifies on the basis of user identity, device type, location, and time of day, and provides differentiated access for different classes of users. Guest access can be tightly controlled with respect to bandwidth consumed as well as the applications and resources that can be accessed.

McCarriar added that Aruba's policy enforcement firewall is getting widespread use and has proven to be an effective means of protecting network integrity. The Mobility Controllers support a range of other software modules, too, and we're currently experimenting with the Remote Access Point (News - Alert) module. That module will enable us to set-up secure off-site network access without requiring any client software.
