U.S. Demand for Mobile Learning Growing by 21.7 Percent

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The U.S. demand for Mobile Learning products and services is growing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.7 percent and revenues topped $538 million in 2007, according to a new report by Ambient Insight titled “The US Market for Mobile Learning Products and Services: 2008- 2013 Forecast.”

Sam S. Adkins, chief research officer for Ambient (News - Alert) Insight sees 2008 as the tipping point for Mobile Learning in the U.S. He informed that all the major educational publishers launched mobile content in the last 12 months and the year also saw an explosion of new technology products.

According to CEO Tyson Greer, despite the recession, the industry has experienced healthy demand for Mobile Learning products. He explained that this report provides extensive examples of competitors, products, and buying behavior and emphasized that this kind of data is indispensable in recessionary business environments.

“The current market offers significant revenue opportunities for suppliers,” he added.

Ambient Insight’s latest report analyzes expenditures by eight buyer segments: consumer, corporate, state and local government, federal government, PreK-12, higher education, non-profits, and healthcare. The report includes a five-year forecast for ten types of packaged content, four types of services, and three types of technology.

The report indicates a growth of 25.8 percent for packaged content and 36.2 percent for the demand for services. The demand for technology is growing by 7.6 percent.

Adkins noted that although the major players are staking out territory in the competitive landscape, the demand is now large, and the barriers-to-entry are still low, allowing new suppliers to enter the market at a steady pace.

“Clearly, the product is recession resilient and the market creation phase for Mobile Learning is over,” he concluded.
