By Wayne Adam, Contributing Writer

In response to customer demand, CourseSmart, the largest provider of digital course materials, has unveiled a major upgrade to its CourseSmart eTextbooksmobile app that has been specifically designed for the Android (News - Alert) Operating System (AOS).  The new Android app will feature online and offline access to digital course materials, thus allowing students and faculty who rely on Android mobile devices to review their course materials whenever they want.

"We have been a leader in the Android space for a long time, and our new application takes that commitment to the next level, offering consumers several highly-anticipated new features," said Sean Devine, CEO of CourseSmart. "As mobile devices continue to proliferate, we will maintain our track record of offering innovation and convenience to both Android and IOS users."

A year end 2012 report from IDC and Gartner (News - Alert) stated, “By the end of 2011, Android will move to become the most popular operating system (OS) worldwide and will build on its strength to account for 49 percent of the smartphone market by 2012.

“By 2015, 67 percent of all open OS devices will have an average selling price of $300 or below, proving that smartphones have been finally truly democratized,” added Roberta Cozza, principal analyst at Gartner.

CourseSmart eTextbooksfor Android is designed for AOS, providing students and faculty access to all of their digital course materials on any Android enabled smartphone, netbook and tablet including Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Motorola Droid, Samsung (News - Alert) Fascinate, HTC Droid Incredible, HTC Droid Eris, HTC myTouch 3G Slider, HTC Evo and Samsung Galaxy 7. In addition, AOS users will have gain access to a full array of eTextbooks features including: access to digital course materials online or offline; add, edit and synchronize notes and highlights online or offline; skim thumbnails or full pages; use of keyword search while online; and the ability to view notes and highlights during an open book exam.

Currently, the application is available for free from the Google (News - Alert) Play store, or can be accessed through CourseSmart’s website.
