Google Apps for Education in High Demand, Backupify's Business Booms

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

As more and more students and schools begin using Google (News - Alert) Apps for Education, new problems have risen when it comes for enforcing IT best practices. Using the technology requires schools to meet various requirements when it comes to data control, compliance and integrity.

Backupify (News - Alert), a provider of cloud-to-cloud backup and recovery solutions for Software as a Service (SaaS) applications, seems to have found the right formula to cater to the educational sector. The company recently announced that it has increased the size of its educational customer base to nearly 100,000 users. This is a huge increase from the number of customers it had in the sector last year.

Some of Backupify’s clients include K-12 school districts such as Fairport Central School District in New York, Rice University and Berklee College of Music, as well as private schools such as The Meadowbrook School of Weston. According to the company, it has witnessed a boom in customer demand since a growing number of educational clients started using Google Apps for Education. Just to put numbers in perspective, more than 20 million students currently use Google Apps for Education.

Backupify allows educational institutions to take control of their Google Apps domain. To achieve this target, the company offers automatic daily backups and one-click restore of Google Docs and Drive, Gmail, Google Contacts, Google Calendar and more.

“Millions of students and educators around the world are currently using Google Apps to enhance collaborative learning," said Rob May, CEO of Backupify.  "The education sector is ahead of other industries in this regard, but faces unique compliance requirements for data privacy and retention that demand an effective backup strategy. We developed Backupify for Education to help educators address these specific needs and ensure compliance with comprehensive data archiving capabilities.”

Recently, the company introduced an improved set of backup and recovery features to support its offering for enterprise-level companies on Google Apps.
