Regis University Implements Powerful Xirrus Arrays to Support Online Learning, Collaboration on Campus

The “bring your own device” craze has hit college campuses across the U.S., and the administration at Denver’s Regis University thought it right to make some investments itself to enhance the school’s wireless connectivity, where some 2,500 smartphones, laptops and other mobile devices are used every day by more than 800 students, as well as Regis faculty and staff.
To this end, the university recently implemented 36 Xirrus Wireless Arrays at the campus, covering all residence halls and student townhouses, several classrooms and the four-story library.
The Regis University Library – the most densely populated area of the college – now has eight Xirrus Arrays, providing always-on wireless connectivity for hundreds of students often hitting the network simultaneously in small pockets of the library.
Erich Delcamp, chief director of IT infrastructure and operations for Regis University, observed that today, it is not uncommon to find a student using two to three wireless devices simultaneously.
The BYOD craze only shows the signs of escalating year over year, Delcamp added. In this situation, what Delcamp needed was a scalable and reliable wireless network that could handle the high-density demands of as many as 100 students seeking mobile access in very small areas.
“Our previous traditional access-point based network didn't have enough channels to support the demands of our Wi-Fi hungry students, and the APs would often shut down,” Delcamp explained in a statement. “While we are in the education business, we have to behave like a hotel and an ISP, and provide our customers – in this case, our students – with the best experience possible. We deployed Xirrus to support our students with wireless coverage they can count on. Xirrus understands our device density challenge; and with its easily administered and low-management Arrays, we're able to track density, control traffic capacity, and scale on demand to meet all of our students' needs.”
Delcamp revealed that by 2014, there will be a campus-wide rollout of the arrays so that wireless capabilities are available in all classrooms, stadiums and gymnasiums.
“With students and faculty members showing up with three or more devices and demanding access to high-bandwidth applications such as video streaming, learning management systems and file sharing, performance of the wireless network is critical. The Xirrus solution was designed, from the start, to deal with this level of performance and provide the ability to prioritize critical application traffic over recreational applications,” vice president of product marketing for Xirrus Bruce Miller (News - Alert) noted in a statement.
“Whatever comes next,” he said, “Xirrus is designed to be seamlessly upgradable and future proof.”
In other news Xirrus has reportedly deployed Relayware to manage and optimize its global indirect sales channels. Relayware provides Xirrus with the ability to select, segment, recruit and onboard new candidates for their indirect sales channel, while automating training, enablement, motivation and performance management.
