Apple's iPad Seeing Huge Growth in Education Sector
By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer
When talking about the education technology field, there are a number of companies that are making a name for themselves when it comes to moving the field sector forward. While there are quite a few smaller companies who have successfully carved out their own little niche in the market, there are some heavy hitters that are having some real success as well. Apple (News - Alert), in particular, has had a decidedly unexpected run of success when it comes to incorporating the iPad into the world of education.
Apple has worked hard over the last few years to make sure it is well known that education is a big part of its mission. At the January 2012 Education Event in New York City, senior VP of worldwide marketing at Apple, Phil Schiller said that, "Education is in Apple's DNA." Backing up that particular statement is a new study that shows that Apple broke its own sales records in the education market in 2012.
Looking at the third quarter sales numbers, the Mac hit all time sales numbers when it came to the education market, but the iPad did even better. Apple's signature tablet actually outsold the hugely popular Mac by a 2-to-1 margin. This was hardly an outlier, as it was the second straight quarter in which iPad numbers had doubled those of the Mac computers.
In more good news for Apple, the iPad in the education market saw a doubling, year over year in sales in the third quarter. Apple says that the iPad sold just under one million units to the education market in the third quarter of 2012 alone. During the earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook expressed just how well iPad sales did. "The adoption rate of iPad in education is something I'd never seen from any technology product in history," Cook said.
With these numbers, put together with several education systems adopting Microsoft services such as its cloud based solutions; it appears that some of the biggest big wigs in the game are indeed making serious strides in education technology.
