By Shankar Pandiath, TMCnet Contributor
Telecoms America, a new prepaid wireless service provided by TracFone Wireless, announced that it has partnered with The University of Texas-Pan American to launch a program that will provide Latino students with the latest smartphones.
It is expected that this grassroots initiative will make it easier and convenient for Latino students to stay connected with their family and friends in Mexico and the United States. This program will effectively bridge the communication gap between families and friends, keeping the students in touch with everyone who matters to them most. Through a program named "Movilizacion Escolar con Telcel America," or Mobilizing Scholars with Telcel America, the company is planning to provide 75 Samsung (News - Alert) Galaxy Precedent smartphones to Hispanic students in the University of Texas-Pan American, at no cost.
In addition to this, the company also offers three months of complimentary airtime to the students, which includes unlimited international and domestic calling, and text and Internet access. With this new service from Telcel (News - Alert) America, the students can now call on landlines and mobile phones in Mexico as well.
Telcel America provides mobile handsets from the leading manufacturers like Nokia, LG, Motorola (News - Alert), and Samsung. At the same, the company strives to deliver the highest quality features and phones to customers at the most competitive prices. With a wide range of cell phones to choose from like camera, candy bar style, sliders, flip, touch screen, smartphones, and QWERTY keypad phones, Telcel America is a mobile phone marketer in the United States. At the same time, the company provides a national coverage in some of the country’s best networks, allowing the users to send text messages and call on mobile phones and landlines in Mexico.
Dr. Robert S. Nelson, UTPA president, and Veronica Gonzales, UTPA VP for University Advancement, together with other representatives of the "Movilizacion Escolar" program hosted a special launch ceremony at the ITT (News - Alert) building of the school to kick start the initiative and announce the first set of recipients for the smartphones. Noted Mexican actor, recording artist, and TV host, Rafael Mercadante, was also present at the launch ceremony to perform and demonstrate his support for “educational empowerment in the Latino community.”
The university president stated his gratitude to Telcel America, saying that the smartphones will pave the way for the students to connect to their loved ones, who otherwise don’t have any other mean to contact their family and friends. It will also ease the costs associated to attending the college, he added.
