Online College Fair to Create a Culture of College Readiness among Hispanic Students
By Mini Swamy, TMCnet Contributor
According to a research study conducted by EdExcelencia, although Latinos make up one sixth of the national population, only 19 percent of Latinos in America have earned an associate degree or higher compared to 38 percent of all adults.
Hence, as part of Univision Communications' multiyear initiative to promote educational attainment in Hispanic America, “Educate, Es El Momento,” the company entered into a partnership with CollegeWeekLive to hold an online college fair to be held on October 11, 2012.
The online fair is expected to underscore the importance of higher education needs of Hispanic students and their families.
For more than eight hours, commencing from 12 p.m., many educational executives from various colleges and universities will underpin the importance of college education, the academic skills that students attain and also detail the entire process starting right from admission to how they can finance students.
Meant to allay the fears and apprehensions that Latino families might entertain about sending their children to college, the interactive program will provide free access to expert college admissions advice through streaming video presentations and live chat with college representatives.
Admissions representatives from more than 120 colleges will be participating in the online fair, ready to interact with students and their families in English and Spanish. Officials noted that the program will enable Latino families to mentally prepare themselves for the process of getting into college and also understand the importance of earning a degree.
"The growing population of Latino students represents an enormous opportunity for colleges and universities. Higher education best contributes to a thriving democratic society when we educate students from all walks of life, including students who are the first in their families to go to college," said Fernando M. Reimers, professor of international education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the program chair for the event.
Es el momento was launched by Univision in February 2010 in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
