Red Hat (News - Alert), Inc. has announced that it has started working on 2012 Fedora Scholarship program, where it recognizes college students across the globe for their contributions to free software and the Fedora Project, a Red Hat-sponsored and community-supported open source collaboration.
Under this Fedora Scholarship scheme, one student is nominated each year to assist with the recipient's college or university education. This is the fifth year in row that the Fedora Scholarship has been offered to inspire college students to use and contribute to open source software.
“The Fedora Scholarship recognizes young talent in the pursuit of innovation. We hope to encourage and foster future technologists to openly develop and contribute technology,” said Jared Smith, employee and Fedora Project Leader at Red Hat.
Smith said that the four previous Fedora Scholarship recipients are extremely active in open source communities while working toward their degrees and open source is the right way for technology to be developed because the best ideas win, and they are excited for the ideas their next-generation technologists are sure to bring.
Currently the submissions are accepted by Red Hat, through which the applicants are evaluated on criteria including the quality of contributions made to Fedora and other free software projects, references provided by Fedora community members, the amount of time the applicant has been contributing to Fedora, and the overall caliber of the application.
Recipients will be granted $2,000 USD annually for each of up to four years they attend a college or university. In addition, funding for travel expenses will be provided during each scholarship year for attendance to a Fedora Users and Developers Conference (FUDCon) in the recipient's region.
In other news, NetHosting, a provider of cloud, dedicated server, VPS server and virtual hosting solutions announced that its hosting products will support the Fedora Project’s newest distribution, Fedora 16, an open-source operating system.
