Broadcom Foundation Named 300 Middle School Semifinalists in First Broadcom MASTERS Challenge

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

Global semiconductor company Broadcom Corporation (News - Alert) announced the names of semifinalists in its first ever Broadcom MASTERS competition.

In a press release, Broadcom Foundation, a private non-profit public benefit organization funded by Broadcom Corporation and the sponsor of MASTERS, clarified that 300 middle school students have been selected as semifinalists. See below for an interview with Broadcom's Michael Hurlston:

Semifinalists came from 251 middle schools across the United States with concentrations in California, Florida, Texas, Ohio and Oregon. The panel of judges comprising distinguished scientists and engineers short listed these semi finalists from among 1,476 applicants located in 45 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico.  The foundation is providing semifinalists' names and a state-by-state breakdown at http://www.societyforscience.org/masters and http://www.broadcomfoundation.org/masters.

The Broadcom MASTERS is the national STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) competition for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. The contestants have been nominated to compete by their local SSP-affiliated science and engineering fair.

Broadcom MASTERS challenge has been designed to inspire middle schoolers to take up STEM courses throughout high school. The competition exposes the participants to independent research, scientific inquiry, hands-on learning and teamwork. According to the contest organizers, students who participate in the Broadcom MASTERS will be better prepared to handle tomorrow’s scientific breakthroughs, engineering feats and technological know-how.

The names of 30 Broadcom MASTERS finalists will be declared on August 31st. The finalists will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC in October to showcase their science fair projects. These finalists will again compete in a four-day STEM competition for attractive awards such as the top education award of $25,000 from Samueli Foundation, a gift of Susan and Henry Samueli, a founder of Broadcom.

Last month at Cisco (News - Alert) Live!, Broadcom Corporation unveiled its fully interoperable FCoE offload solution on the world's fastest converged network adapter (CNA) platform with performance speeds of up to 1.7 million input/output operations per second (IOPs) - more than 80 percent faster than the nearest competitor.
