Bethel School District Using Impulse Point's SafeConnect Solution for Successful Implementation of Its BYOD Policy

By Madhubanti Rudra, TMCnet Contributor

The well known provider of Network Access Control (NAC) solution, Impulse Point, recently announced that its highly acclaimed SafeConnect has been selected by Bethel School District for the successful implementation of its Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) policy.

SafeConnect has been designed for large, diverse environments like education, where it is essential to provide endpoint security policy enforcement for a myriad of personally-owned, non-managed, mobile computing devices. SafeConnect is deployed and supported as a managed service. As a result of its rapid installation, network independence, and track record of reducing help desk calls, it has become the solution of choice in the education sector. Designed for both wireless and VPN network security, SafeConnect is currently delivering an affordable deployment of highly secure Aruba wireless district-wide, from district headquarters to all 27 school locations, said Impulse Point in the press release.

Bethel acknowledges the value of connected devices in making learning interesting and easier for the students. Yet, it takes huge financial strain on the institution’s budgets, it has to equip each student with such a devices. Through its BYOD policy, Bethel allows students to use the devices they want to use but without incurring additional budget. At the same time, the institution is aware that BYOD policies also can open the network to vulnerability if not handled correctly. SafeConnect will ensure that students can use unmanaged devices for learning, while securing Bethel School District's wireless network throughout the district.

According to industry reports, the BYOD policy is becoming increasingly popular among the students as well as among their parents. Majority of parents of K-12 students are willing to present their children with a mobile device as a learning aid. More than 50 percent of high school students think that it would make it easier to learn if they are allowed to use their own mobile device.

In recognition of this trend, Bethel School District adopted the BYOD policy and for the successful implementation of the policy, the thirteenth largest district in the state of Washington chose Impulse Point as its networking partner. Strong recommendations from Dell (News - Alert) and fellow customer University of Puget Sound, influenced the decision in favor of Impulse Point Bethel revealed in a press release.

"We know Impulse Point SafeConnect is the right answer for us as we grapple with the increasing complexity of handling the growing number of unmanaged and managed devices connecting to the network. Impulse Point's expertise in higher education environments has been invaluable as our K-12 world starts to look similar and we find new ways to tap into technology for learning,” director of technology at Bethel School District Marc Elliott noted in a statement.

Last month, Impulse Point announced its partnership with Cloudpath Networks. Under the partnership, Impulse Point was to offer Cloudpath's XpressConnect with Impulse Point's SafeConnect Network Access Control (NAC) Version 5.1 solution.
