Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) Publishes New Standard on Mobile Security

By Rajani Baburajan

Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA (News - Alert)), a trade association representing the global information and communications technology (ICT) industries through standards development, government affairs, business opportunities, market intelligence, certification, and worldwide environmental regulatory compliance, has published a new standard, TIA-1091 IMS Security Framework, on mobile security.

TIA-1091 IMS Security Framework defines the features and mechanisms necessary to ensure secure access to third generation (3G) broadband technologies for delivering IP multimedia applications, including video, audio, graphics, conferencing and data, to mobile devices.

3G wireless broadband services are deployed over the IP Multimedia Core Network Subsystem (IMS) and use Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert) (SIP) as the signaling protocol for creating and terminating multimedia sessions with the subscriber’s mobile device. TIA-1091 defines how the SIP signaling is protected between the subscriber and the IMS framework, how the subscriber is authenticated, and how the subscriber authenticates the IMS.

With support from 600 members, TIA enhances the business environment for companies involved in telecommunications, broadband, mobile wireless, information technology, networks, cable, satellite, unified communications, emergency communications and the greening of technology. TIA is accredited by American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

TIA contributes to voluntary industry standards that support global trade and commerce in communications products and systems and has advocated numerous policy issues for the benefit of its members as well as sponsored engineering committees that set standards determining the pace of development in the industry and provided a marketplace for members and their customers.
