SlimGenics Commemorates 10th Anniversary by Fighting Childhood Obesity with the Launch of "NObesity™"
DENVER --(Business Wire)--
A leader in nutritionally
based weight loss programs, Denver-based SlimGenics Weight
Control Centers today announced the launch of its new initiative,
NObesity, which is designed to increase awareness of and support the
movement to end childhood obesity in this country. To kick off NObesity,
SlimGenics is offering youth ages 10-17 free enrollment in its Youth
Program throughout the month of March. The 90-day program is focused
on providing nutritional education for kids and their families so they
can learn the importance of making healthier food and lifestyle choices,
work toward attaining a healthy weight and change poor eating behaviors.
Parents can visit www.slimgenics.com
for enrollment information and program details.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 12.5
million children in this country are obese, and childhood obesity rates
have more than tripled in the last 10 years. Obese youth are more likely
to develop serious health complications such as high cholesterol and
pre-diabetes. They also suffer from emotional issues including poor
self-esteem, which affects every aspect of their lives.
Through its Youth Program, SlimGenics has been combating childhood
obesity since 2003. It has helped hundreds of children achieve a healthy
weight by teaching them how to make smarter eating choices so they can
live longer, fuller lives. The Youth rogram is not a diet or
restrictive eating plan, and it's not based on pre-packaged meals or a
point system. The goal of the program is to educate kids about
nutritious foods rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole
grains, while completely changing their eating habits and the way they
think about food. Each child has professional counselors who provide
one-on-one support as much as needed to help the kids stay on track and
encouraged throughout their journey to a healthy weight.
"Fighting childhood obesity has been a passion of mine ever since I
started the company 10 years ago," said Katherine Ott, CEO of
SlimGenics. "It only seemed fitting then to announce our new NObesity
initiative sponsored by The SlimGenics Foundation in conjunction with
our 10th anniversary. We are launching NObesity with a free 90-day
program enrollment for all youth clients in March to help start a louder
dialogue in our community about this growing epidemic, and in the years
to come we'll do whatever we can to support the movement to end
childhood obesity."
Additionally, in honor of SlimGenics Childhood Obesity Awareness Day in
Denver, officially proclaimed by the office of Mayor Michael Hancock, on
Monday, Feb. 25th SlimGenics will donate 10 percent of all its center
sales to The SlimGenics Foundation. The Foundation was established in
2010 to help support organizations and innovative programs that provide
nutritional education and assist in preventing childhood obesity and
malnutrition. LiveWell Colorado, Denver Urban Gardens and 2040 Partners
for Health are partners of The Foundation and work with SlimGenics to
create innovative programming to help educate families about the dangers
of childhood obesity and the tools necessary to help prevent it.
"I was 13 years old and overweight when I started the SlimGenics Youth
Program," said Nicki Markussen. "Today, as a junior in high school, I am
healthy and more confident than ever. If I hadn't lost the weight, I
don't know where I would be now, but I do know that the weight would
have held me back from a future that is now full of possibilities."
