Duval schools to seek input on proposed strategic plan

Feb 20, 2013 (The Florida Times-Union - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Duval County Public Schools will take a portion of its proposed strategic plan on the road beginning next week to get public input and opinion.

The School Board and Superintendent Nikolai Vitti have worked since to late January to reform the strategic plan while also streamlining the school system's goals, core values, mission and vision.

The district will host community forums on the strategic plan on Feb. 27 at Fletcher High School, March 7 at Lee High School and March 12 at Andrew Jackson High School. Each forum starts at 6 p.m.

School Board Chairman Fel Lee said the goal is the help make the documents and statements more digestible.

"It just gets back to communication," Lee said. "How do we communicate with all of the stakeholders so that people are engaged with us and they can assist us and they can assist our students." The board will vote April 2 on whether to adopt the proposed framework, which will cut the district's mission and vision statement by half to make the statements tighter and more focused.

"That means people can maybe understand it a little quicker," Lee said. "They aren't convoluted and the words seem to resonate better." The strategic plan's goals will go from six to four, but targets for the measurable student outcomes are still to be determined. Some portion of Vitti's annual evaluation will be based on the targets but the board hasn't determined what percentage.

The board will schedule a vote after the district's most recent test performance is released, which is anticipated in June.

Vitti said the process is on schedule and he believes the goals and statements reflect what he's heard during his town hall meetings, from board members, the superintendent search committees and from participants in Jacksonville Public Education Fund's One by One initiative.

The plan will allow the district to determine what it should prioritize financially and where partners can assist them, Vitti said.
