Yuba College put on probation
Feb 15, 2013 (Appeal-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Yuba College and its Clear Lake campus have been put on probation after a visit from an accrediting commission in October found several shortcomings.
The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior College imposed probation sanctions because Yuba College fell short in areas related to planning, resource allocation and the assessment of student learning, according to a college district statement.
The college will now be subject to reports and visits from the commission until it makes the appropriate corrections, district spokeswoman Miriam Root said.
"There were things we did well," she said, "but some things we need to do better."
Root said the district is taking the sanctions seriously, and has already made steps toward correcting the problems.
According to an evaluation report by the commission, requirements the college needs to meet include:
--Developing a variety of communication strategies to ensure that all employees are aware of how they can access information in the collegial governance process.
--Strengthening its use of research in support of planning and evaluation.
--Ensuring that quality training in the use of technology is provided for faculty, staff and students.
--Ensuring that custodial staff are adequate to support the existing facilities needs.
Several other recommendations were included in the commission's report.
Staff and administration recognized the problems before they were identified by the commission in October, she said.
"We were not surprised," Root said.
The commission, during meetings in January, imposed actions on dozens of colleges in the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
Yuba College was the only institution to receive probation on the basis of a comprehensive evaluation. However, four out-of-area colleges received continued probation or received "show cause" status, meaning they need to prove why they should be accredited.
Several other colleges received warnings.
