Police seek help in finding hit-and-run vehicle

Feb 01, 2013 (The Buffalo News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Buffalo Police Accident Investigation Unit is seeking the public's help in findig the black Dodge Durango -- described as a "vehicle of interest" in a hit-and-run incident that seriously injured a woman on Jan. 16.

Police spokesman Michael DeGeorge said the victim, who was in a motorized wheelchair, was hit while returning home about 1:15 p.m. from Bible school at Mount Olive Baptist Church on East Delavan Avenue. She was hit while crossing north in the crosswalk at Appenheimer Street at Fillmore Avenue, and knocked off her wheelchair.

DeGeorge said investigators said the hit-and-run vehicle -- model year 2004 to 2009 -- backed up in an attempt to go around her but struck her again as the victim pleaded for the driver to stop.

The vehicle, which received front-end damage, fled east on Appenheimer, dragging parts of the wheelchair beneath it, witnesses said.

A video camera captured images of the hit-and-run vehicle leaving the scene.

The victim, 61, who was hospitalized at Erie County Medical Center, was discharged on Wednesday.

DeGeorge said investigators, in particular, are appealing for help from auto repair shops, salvage yards or parts suppliers who may have come in contact with the damaged vehicle.
