Kennedy singing at Love the Symphony

Jan 24, 2013 (The Wilson Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Lauren Kennedy, Broadway star and recording artist, will be featured performer at the annual Love the Symphony concert at Barton College on Valentine's Day.


This is the 22nd year for the Barton College/ Wilson Symphony Orchestra event, which is now housed at in Wilson Gymnasium.

Barton staff decorate the gym to provide a romantic backdrop for couples celebrating the special day, but groups of friends are also known to book tables and enjoy the night of music and good food.

Kennedy was born and raised in Raleigh and has family ties to Wilson, but she has traveled around the world for leading roles in musical productions. On Broadway, she has performed in key roles in Monty Python's "Spamalot," "Sunset Boulevard," "Side Show" and "Les Miserables." Other performances include "Cinderella" at New York City Opera and Off-Broadway in "Vanities" and "Good Ol' Girls." In London she stared in Trevor Nunn's revival of "South Pacific" as Nellie Forbush at The Royal National Theatre. Kennedy appeared opposite Val Kilmer in "The Ten Commandments" at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. She also was featured in the pre-Broadway production of "Lone Star Love" with Randy Quaid, and she made a national tour with the production of "Sunset Boulevard" as Betty Schaeffer.

Kennedy, whose latest album is "Here and Now," is artist director of Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy in Raleigh. She and her husband, Alan Campbell, are the namesakes of the Barton black box theater.

The Barton College/Wilson Symphony Orchestra will perform the overture to "Donna Dianna" by Emil von Reznicek and Jaques Offenbach's overture to "Orpheus in the Underworld." Also on the program will be two works for solo bass viol featuring the orchestra's long-time principal bassist, Emily Rupp.

Love the Symphony starts at 6:30 p.m. with a reception followed by the concert at 7. A candlelight buffet will be served after the program, around 8 p.m. Tickets are $60 per person.
