Students Compete for Scholarship in Mathematics Competition
ALEXANDRIA, VA, Jan 11, 2013 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) --
In an economic climate where most schools and organizations face
budget cuts limiting their ability to function, the Reel Math
Challenge (http://reelmath.org) is triumphing in its second year.
With hundreds of participants last year, the 2013 Reel Math Challenge
hopes to attract even more students. Each of the four finalist team
members along with one adult chaperone will receive an all-expense
paid trip to the 2013 MATHCOUNTS National Competition, where they
will present their videos to those participating in that event.
The MATHCOUNTS National Competition is held annually in Washington,
DC, bringing hundreds of students and their student advisors together
to compete for national in the area of mathematics, but also vote for
the winner of the Reel Math Challenge. As an incentive for all Reel
Math Challenge participants, each member of the winning team will
receive a $1,000 scholarship. Even those who are not finalists are
eligible for great prizes, including $25 gift cards during weekly
drawings, all provided by MATHCOUNTS sponsors.
Created to promote mathematics education for students in grades six
through eight, the Reel Math Challenge is a competition requiring a
team of four to create and star in an educational math video
(http://reelmath.org/videos) that illustrates a math problem and
demonstrates its solution. The competition not only teaches math
skills by using problems within the middle school mathematics
curriculum, but encourages creativity, teamwork, and sportsmanship,
skills that many schools struggle to teach within the confines of a
classroom.
The Reel Math Challenge is an annual competition from the MATHCOUNTS
organization. MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment club and
competition program that promotes middle school mathematics
achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and
territory. Currently in its 30th year, MATHCOUNTS is one of the
country's largest and most successful education partnerships
involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students. For
