Dec 21, 2012 (The Providence Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rhode Island is not only losing population -- as U.S. Census Bureau numbers revealed Thursday -- it is also losing income as people moving in make less than those leaving, a deeper look at Census numbers shows.

Although population estimates released Thursday do not track income, the bureau's American Community Survey does.

The latest numbers from that survey cover moves from 2010 to 2011 and show the number of people moving and their median income: -- Moving to Rhode Island from another state: 26,769 people, $11,317 median income. (Many moving in are college freshmen, a low-income group.) -- Rhode Islanders moving to another state: 31,065 people, $22,794.

-- Moving to Rhode Island from a foreign country: 7,778 people, $19,443.
