BRIEF: Iredell-Statesville wins $20 million school reform grant

Dec 11, 2012 (The Charlotte Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Iredell-Statesville Schools has won a $20 million federal Race to the Top grant for school reform, beating out districts across North Carolina and around the nation.

ISS was among 372 districts that applied for the money, and was one of only 16 winners. The district's proposal calls for creating flexible, personalized learning.

"No two students, no two schools and no two districts are alike," U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan said in a news release. "These funds will allow Iredell-Statesville Schools to serve over 9,000 students while recognizing that each student has unique needs." Guilford County Schools, the only other finalist from North Carolina, also finished in the top 16, receiving a $30 million grant.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Union County were among the districts that applied but did not receive money.
