Quick repeats as all-conference honoree

Nov 29, 2012 (The Floyd County Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Quick repeats as all-conference honoree slideshow PIKEVILLE -- For the second year in a row, sophomore Grayson Quick has been named both first-team and honorable mention All-Mid-South Conference East Division.


In a vote of coaches within the division, Quick was selected as the first-team placekicker and was named to the honorable mention list as a punter.

He was joined on the honorable-mention list by offensive linemen Brandon Ball and Johnny Brown as well as linebacker John Dudley Hilton.

In addition, a record nine Bears were named to Mid-South Conference Scholar-Athletes thanks to their efforts in the classroom.

Quick is a 5-11, 175-pound sophomore from Lugoff, S.C. He averaged 51.6 yards per kickoff and had five touchbacks this season. He was also 8-of-12 on fiels goal tries, hitting 2-of-4 from beyond 40 yards including a season-best 45-yard effort against Georgetown College.

But what set Quick apart this season was his extra-point kicks. He was 32-of-32 and became the first kicker in the history of Pikeville football to successfully hit all of his PAT tries for a season. As a result, he led the Bears in scoring with 56 points in 2012.

Hilton is a 5-11, 230-pound sophomore from Pineville. He led the Bears with 74 tackles this season, 52 of which were solos. He had four tackles for loss from his linebacker position and one sack. He intercepted two passes and forced one fumble.

Ball is a 6-3, 314-pound freshman from East Burnstadt who played at North Laurel High School, while Brown is a 6-1, 311-pound sophomore from Bethlehem, Ga., who played high school football at Apalachee. While both played multiple positions, by season's end, Ball was starting at right tackle was Brown was the starter at left guard.

The nine players who were named to the scholar-athlete list were: Demitri Curry, a junior from Stockbridge, Ga., who majors in criminal justice; Dontevius Daniel, a sophomore from Hogansville, Ga., majoring in communication; Tanner Gilbert, a sophomore from Manchester who majors in biology; Hilton, a sophomore from Pineville majoring in biology; Seth Millar, a sophomore from Waynesboro, Ohio, majoring in English; Tanner Napier, a sophomore from Lexington who majors in business administration emphasizing management; Donovan Schwalbach, a senior from Batavia, Ohio, majoring in criminal justice; Martin Williams, a sophomore from Lawrenceville, Ga., who majors in mathematics; and Youphin Yeurn, a redshirt freshman from Bowling Green who is undecided.

In order to be nominated by an institution, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved at least sophomore academic status.
