Souper fundraiser

GRAND HAVEN, Nov 16, 2012 (Grand Haven Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Community members gathered for soup and socializing on Thursday.

In all, 319 people stopped by St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grand Haven to have their lunch at the annual Soup for All benefit.

Although they won't know the amount of money raised from the event until Monday, Karen Reenders -- director of The People Center in Spring Lake and a member of the Soup for All committee -- said they think they raised more than last year. She said many diners were giving above and beyond the $10 ticket price.

"We are just thrilled," Reenders said.

The event was held in conjunction with National Homeless Awareness Week and serves as a fundraiser to address homeless issues in the area. Proceeds benefit local organizations providing homeless prevention services or those with on-site food pantry services.

Servers ranging from local school officials, real estate agents and a couple of WZZM-TV personalities spooned up nine varieties of soup donated by area businesses. The menu included tomato basil, broccoli cheese, beef barley, white chicken chili, vegetarian chili, wild rice cream of mushroom, chicken tortilla, goulash and red chili.

Students from Grand Haven and Spring Lake schools also volunteered for the event by manning a dessert table and delivering drinks to guests.

Spring Lake resident Pam Klein, who tried the chicken tortilla soup, said the event provided the perfect setup for meeting with friends for lunch while helping the community.

"We felt like it was a worthy cause to support," said Jennifer Gable, also of Spring Lake.
