Lady 'Cats crush Lobos: Reach semis at Santa T.
Nov 07, 2012 (The Deming Headlight - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
A hasty Lady Wildcat volleyball team made short work of the visiting Chaparral High on Tuesday and put on service clinic in a 25-8, 25-7 and 25-14 rout over the Lobos at Deming High School. It took the Lady 'Cats less than an hour to reach the semi-final round of the District 3-4A Tournament set for Thursday at Santa Teresa.
In each of the first two games, Deming jumped out to 9-1 advantages and peppered the Lobos with an array of service aces and unreturnable serves.
"We work a lot on our serves and try to pick spots on the floor to gain a better percentage," said DHS head coach TamiJo Treadwell.
Deming (7-15 overall and 4-3 in the district) got a strong net attack from Mireya Martinez, Celeste Camacho, Sophia Magnuson and Starlyn Treadwell. Chaparral -- winless on the season -- had difficulty handling Deming on defense and struggled in serve-receive.
Lady 'Cat leaders from the service line were Selene Campos, Nadine Ramirez and Alex Moran.
Deming has defeated Santa Teresa in two of three matches this season.
"The girls know they can beat Santa T. It's just a matter of us passing the ball well and doing a good job in serve-receive," coach Treadwell said.
"They (Desert Warriors) serve the ball well and we have to move our feet and be in better position for the short serve and react to the deep ball."
The Lady 'Cats and Desert Warriors square off at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Santa Teresa High School. The winner will move on to the District 3-4A Championship match on Saturday at Centennial High School in Las Cruces.
