BRIEF: Catlin Gabel's Yale Fan joins 2010 U.S. Physics Team

May 19, 2010 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Yale Fan, best known for his recent headline-grabbing international science fair win, was selected this week as one of 20 students across the nation to join the 2010 U.S. Physics Team.

Fan, a senior at Catlin Gabel School in Beaverton, will travel to College Park, MD the last week in May to train for the grueling exams and lab tests he may face if he is among the five team members selected to compete at the 41st International Physics Olympiad, July 17 to 25 in Zagreb, Croatia. The event includes 400 students from 90 nations.

The five top scholars will be selected May 31, according to information from the American Association of Physics Teachers, which selects the students and organizes their training.

Fan was among 3,300 students in the United States who went through a rigorous exam process, beginning last January. He was nominated to the team by Catlin Gabel teacher Robert Sauer.

The training camp is a crash course in the first two years of university physics. Students will learn about the latest research from some of the nation's leading physicists.

The U.S. Physics Olympiad Program was started in 1986 by the American Association of Physics Teachers.
